Five Woollen Fingers

CoupletOn a fence post along the lane
Somebody raised your glove up high
So you would see it passing by
Five fingers open, stiff with rain
He never knew whose glove it was
He didn't look to find your face
He bent down once, right in that place
And walked away, the way one does

RefrainThe glove upon the post
Waves at the ones who roam
It holds a lost hand out
To those who don't come home

CoupletYou're walking home the old way round
Your other hand deep in your coat
You feel the cold catch in your throat
Your boots crunch on the frozen ground
You see it through the mist, it shows
Stuck up there like a battle flag
A random hello, a woollen rag
And you laugh through your runny nose

RefrainThe glove upon the post
Waves at the ones who roam
It holds a lost hand out
To those who don't come home

PontNo name
No word
Five woollen fingers
And the thumb turned up

CoupletI was the stranger at the gate
I never met you, not one day
I've dropped so many hands on my way
Left behind me, early and late
If someone comes along my track
Let them bend down for what remains
It just takes one post, no great pains
And the hand will hold the cold back

Refrain finalThe glove upon the post
Waves at the ones who roam
It holds a lost hand out
And someone's coming home
